School Avoidance Services

When attending school becomes difficult or distressing, it can be an overwhelming experience for children and young people. These challenges are never something a child chooses, and they can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and isolation.

As a parent or carer, it can be difficult to know where to turn—but you are not alone. I offer a range of tailored support packages to help you and your child understand and address their School Avoidance, working together to find a positive way forward.

I have over 15 years’ experience supporting children facing mild to severe school avoidance. With specialist training in the mental health and neurodiverse needs that often underpin this challenge, I use a range of evidence-informed strategies and tools to guide support.

Drawing on both professional training and hands-on experience, I work closely with children, families, and schools to help each child find a positive and sustainable route back into education.

Understanding EBSA and ABSA
Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and Anxiety-Based School Avoidance (ABSA) describe children and young people who struggle to attend school due to emotional distress. While both can result in school refusal, they differ in focus.

ABSA is specifically linked to anxiety—often triggered by factors such as academic pressure, social worries, bullying, or sensory overload. It typically presents with symptoms like panic attacks, physical complaints, or refusal to leave home, and is usually rooted in school-specific concerns.

EBSA is broader, involving a more complex mix of emotional challenges both in and outside school. These may include mental health issues, emotional regulation difficulties, or family-related stress. EBSA often affects multiple areas of a child’s life and requires a more holistic, collaborative approach to support.

Bespoke Programme of Support

£75 per hour

Support is tailored to meet the individual needs of children experiencing School Avoidance. Working collaboratively with families and schools (where appropriate), I design personalised programmes to help ease the return to education.

Support may include:

  • Step-by-step reintegration plans

  • Facilitating communication between home and school

  • Structured school visits

  • Exploring and managing anxieties

  • Building coping strategies

Each package begins with a one-hour online consultation to agree on priorities and next steps.

Bespoke Workshops

£75 per hour

These online one-hour workshops are designed for families who want to gain a clearer understanding of School Avoidance, including Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and Anxiety-Based School Avoidance (ABSA).

Each session explores the emotional and psychological factors that can contribute to a child or young person’s difficulty attending school, and offers practical guidance on how to support them effectively at home and in partnership with school.

Workshops are informative, compassionate, and grounded in real-life experience—helping families feel more confident, better equipped, and less alone on what can be a challenging journey.

Mediation and Advocation

£75 per hour

Not all schools feel fully equipped to support children experiencing School Avoidance (EBSA/ABSA), and it can be difficult for families when a child’s needs aren’t fully understood or recognised in the education setting.

With extensive experience across the SEND system, I work closely with families and schools to bridge this gap—advocating for the child and supporting settings to make meaningful, reasonable adjustments. My role includes facilitating professional dialogue, ensuring the child’s voice is heard, and helping to implement supportive strategies such as:

  • Flexible or reduced timetables

  • Access to quiet, safe spaces

  • Sensory breaks

  • Adjusted start and end-of-day transitions

  • Clearly agreed expectations for the school day

The aim is always to create a collaborative plan that feels manageable for the child and achievable for the setting—laying the foundations for a positive and sustainable return to education.
